Papering the Lid

Lid papers are a decorative element found on many Flemish harpsichords. These are block printed papers that are glued onto the lid and often glued to the visible inside section of the case, and onto the keywell area surrounding the keyboard(s). The papers are carefully cut to fit against one another, especially on the bentside edge of the lid. As shown in the photo, they are often tinted as the original color is usually green on creme or some variety of those colors. After installation, Latin phrases are often painted on both the small and large lids as an extra decorative element.
